31 days: roar

Every generation has had a “girl power” song. This would be the newest generation’s song.
It’s also become a theme-song lately, not just for me, but for several people I’ve spoken with recently.
It’s got spunk and encouragement. It 100% says, “GO GIRL!” and “GO YOU!”

As if I was wondering if this song was “worthy” of a blog post for 31 Days, given that I’ve got quite the list of songs to share, Katy went and made a contest for high schools out of it. Just one more reason to love this song. I mean, who doesn’t appreciate that she’s using her platform to encourage our most vulnerable age demographic? (If you don’t yet know about the Good Morning America/Katy Perry/Roar video contest, you can learn more about it here.) Be sure to watch GMA on Friday, October 25th, to see more about the concert from Colorado.

Roar
by Katy Perry

I used to bite my tongue and hold my breath
Scared to rock the boat and make a mess
So I sat quietly, agreed politely
I guess that I forgot I had a choice
I let you push me past the breaking point
I stood for nothing, so I fell for everything

You held me down, but I got up (hey!)
Already brushing off the dust
You hear my voice, your hear that sound
Like thunder, gonna shake the ground
You held me down, but I got up
Get ready ’cause I had enough
I see it all, I see it now

I got the eye of the tiger, the fire
Dancing through the fire
‘Cause I am a champion, and you’re gonna hear me roar
Louder, louder than a lion
‘Cause I am a champion, and you’re gonna hear me roar!

Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
You’re gonna hear me roar!

Now I’m floating like a butterfly
Stinging like a bee I earned my stripes
I went from zero, to my own hero

You held me down, but I got up (hey!)
Already brushing off the dust
You hear my voice, your hear that sound
Like thunder, gonna shake the ground
You held me down, but I got up
Get ready ’cause I’ve had enough
I see it all, I see it now

I got the eye of the tiger, the fire
Dancing through the fire
‘Cause I am a champion, and you’re gonna hear me roar
Louder, louder than a lion
‘Cause I am a champion, and you’re gonna hear me roar!

Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
You’re gonna hear me roar!

Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
You’re gonna hear me roar!

Roar, roar, roar, roar, roar!

I honestly don’t know (and really don’t care) if she wrote this about her past relationships or not, I’d guess she did, but that’s beside the point of the message that lies in the lyrics. Anyone can relate to this song at any point in their lives – and that makes a song successful.

I used to be pushed down. I used to be pushed around. I used to not open my mouth. I let you dictate who I could be.
I let someone other than God tell me my value.
Not anymore.

I am a child of God.
I matter.
I am important. I have regained my identity.

Now, step back and hear me…
Listen to me.
I’m claiming my identity and place.
God has told me who I am, so here I go.
Try and stop me now…
